In the Room

Sometimes you know exactly what's brought you here. Other times, all you know is that something doesn't feel quite right anymore.
Not everyone comes to counselling in crisis. Many people arrive having held things together for longer than they should have. Others find themselves in the middle of something painful, overwhelming or life-changing.
Whatever has brought you here, we begin there.

I'm a Level 5 qualified person-centred counsellor offering both short-term counselling and longer-term therapeutic work.
Simply put, person-centred counselling begins with the belief that you are the expert on your own life. My role isn't to fix you, analyse you or tell you who you should become. Instead, I offer a space where you can think things through honestly, without feeling you need to perform, explain everything perfectly or arrive with the right words.
We'll work collaboratively rather than me leading the way. At times I may gently challenge you, not because I have the answers, but because it can be difficult to see ourselves clearly when we're in the middle of something.
Often, we already know more than we think we do. Therapy offers the time and room to hear yourself more clearly, make sense of what's going on and decide what matters to you.

People often wonder what the difference is between counselling and psychotherapy. In reality, there isn't a huge difference. Both offer a confidential therapeutic relationship in which to explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences through talking therapy.
Counselling is often associated with shorter-term support, while psychotherapy is often used to describe longer-term exploration of longstanding patterns, relationships and past experiences. In practice, the distinction is rarely that clear. Many people arrive thinking they're coming to talk about one thing, only to discover there's something deeper asking to be understood.
My role isn't to decide that for you. Being client-led means we begin with whatever brings you here. Whether the work stays with what's happening now or gradually explores deeper patterns and past experiences, we'll find the pace and direction together.

I work with people navigating anxiety, grief, relationship difficulties, trauma, life transitions and the emotional impact of long-term health conditions.
Alongside my private practice, I work as a counsellor with the Stroke Association. This has given me extensive experience supporting people adjusting to changes in identity, confidence, fatigue, communication, relationships and the experience of feeling misunderstood when much of what they're living with isn't visible.
Whether what you're facing has a clear name or is simply difficult to put into words, we'll work at your pace, online, on the phone or in person in Cornwall.

Before becoming a counsellor, I spent many years working in talent, partnerships and organisational change, helping individuals and organisations navigate periods of transition. Although the settings have changed, the work has similarities: listening carefully, understanding different perspectives and helping people find a way forward when life feels uncertain.
Counselling became personal before it became professional. During a difficult period of my own life, therapy gave me something I hadn't realised I was missing, not answers, but a deeper understanding of myself and of what had happened to me. It helped me see my experiences differently, and that changed the way I moved forward. That experience is one of the reasons I chose this profession.
Outside the therapy room, you'll usually find me walking the coast, sea swimming or reading. I'm particularly interested in the relationship between mind and body, and continue to develop my practice in trauma-informed therapy, breathwork and the ways movement can support emotional wellbeing.
I offer a free 15-minute introductory call before you commit to anything.
It's a chance to talk about what's brought you here, ask any questions you may have, and get a sense of whether working together feels like the right fit.

"A safe and kind person to be messy with. You challenge me and are honest, but never in a way that feels anything but considered, thoughtful and with love."
— S, Client"You listen intently and help me understand different perspectives, you have great intuition about people. I always feel lighter for sharing, and you remember things I've said months ago and help me to reflect."
— M, Client"I feel I can tell you anything and you always listen with no judgement, despite some of my questionable choices."
